What Are Mutations?

Mutations are modifiers that apply to your crops, multiplying their sell value. A single mutation can turn a 1,000 Sheckle crop into a 125,000 Sheckle crop. Understanding mutations is the key to late-game profit in Grow a Garden.

Mutation Categories

Growth Mutations

These are the "tier" mutations that appear on crops naturally or through pets:

| Mutation | Multiplier | Source | |----------|-----------|--------| | Silver | 5x | Random chance, Praying Mantis pet | | Gold | 20x | Random chance, Dragonfly pet | | Rainbow | 50x | Very rare, Butterfly pet (4-5 mutations) |

Growth mutations conflict with each other — a crop can only have one of Silver, Gold, or Rainbow at a time.

Environmental Mutations

Applied by weather, pets, or biome effects:

| Mutation | Multiplier | Source | |----------|-----------|--------| | Pollinated | 1.5x | Bee, Queen Bee pets | | Sandy | 2x | Jackalope pet | | Windstruck | 3x | Pterodactyl pet | | Moonlit | 3x | Night time, Moon Cat pet | | Verdant | 3x | Emerald Snake pet | | Shocked | 4x | Thunderstorms, Raiju pet | | Toxic | 4x | Cockatrice pet | | Honey Glazed | 5x | Bear Bee pet (exclusive) | | Twisted | 8x | Pterodactyl pet (rare) | | Cyclonic | 15x | Griffin pet | | Crystallized | 25x | Sapphire Macaw pet |

Special Mutations

Applied exclusively by specific pets with unique abilities:

| Mutation | Multiplier | Source | |----------|-----------|--------| | Chakra | 5x | Kitsune pet | | Plasma | 5x | Marshmallow Lamb, Peach Wasp | | Haze | 6x | Hazehound pet (Season 4) | | Floral | 8x | Orchid Mantis (chains to Gold to Rainbow) | | Jackpot | 10x | Fortune Squirrel pet | | Spotty | 10x | Black Spotty Dragon | | Corrupted Chakra | 15x | Corrupted Kitsune | | Voidtouched | 25x | Space Squirrel pet | | Brainrot | 30x | Lemon Lion (Admin War exclusive) | | Sylvan | 35x | Moss Wyvern pet | | Fortune | 50x | Golden Goose (Golden Egg Plants) | | Foxfire Chakra | 90x | Kitsune pet (rare chance) | | Corrupted Foxfire Chakra | 90x | Corrupted Kitsune (rare) | | Disco | 125x | Disco Bee pet (exclusive) |

How Mutations Stack

Mutations stack multiplicatively. This means the multipliers multiply each other, not add.

Example: Gold (20x) + Pollinated (1.5x) + Honey Glazed (5x) = 20 × 1.5 × 5 = 150x total

On a crop worth 1,000 base value, that's 150,000 Sheckles.

Use our Mutation Stacking Calculator to find the best combinations.

Mutation Conflicts

Some mutations cannot coexist on the same crop:

  • Silver, Gold, Rainbow — Only one growth mutation at a time
  • Moonlit vs Bloodlit — Different lunar states
  • Chakra vs Foxfire Chakra — Same source, different tiers
  • Corrupted Chakra vs Corrupted Foxfire Chakra — Same source, different tiers

Best Mutation Strategies

For Maximum Value

Stack as many non-conflicting mutations as possible. The theoretical maximum involves:

  1. Disco (125x) from Disco Bee
  2. Crystallized (25x) from Sapphire Macaw
  3. Cyclonic (15x) from Griffin
  4. Honey Glazed (5x) from Bear Bee
  5. Pollinated (1.5x) from any bee pet

Combined: 125 × 25 × 15 × 5 × 1.5 = 351,562.5x

For Consistent Profit

Focus on pets that reliably apply mutations:

  • Dragonfly for Gold (20x) every ~5 minutes
  • Bee for Pollinated (1.5x) constantly
  • T-Rex for random mutations every 3-4 minutes

The Butterfly Rainbow Strategy

The Butterfly pet has a unique ability: it converts any crop with 4-5+ mutations into a Rainbow mutation (50x). This strips all previous mutations but replaces them with one guaranteed 50x.

This is most useful when you have many low-value mutations stacked — if their combined total is less than 50x, the Butterfly upgrade is an improvement.
